With its establishment in 2013 under the Center for Service an Learning (CSL), The Collaborative at West Virginia University (WVU) aims to utilize higher education to enrich lives, build partnerships, and connect the university to the communities we serve through civic engagement and national service with the help of AmeriCorps. This partnership has allowed the Center for Service and Learning to create two programs under The Collaborative:
This program supports retention of at-risk, post-secondary students by giving them a foundation to move them toward graduation in four years. Additionally, The Collaborative Direct will promote engagement, increased academic performance, and community building to help ensure college completion. This program is aimed towards undergraduate students at West Virginia University looking to invest in a long-term volunteer opportunity within their community.
This program is leading the way in developing higher education as a hub for the AmeriCorps VISTA program. In accordance with our land-grant mission, we are striving to develop targeted, unique collaborations that support innovative student learning, leverage resources within the university, and develop engagement programming to improve outcomes in the community and strengthen student success. Through collective effort, these collaborations will create a larger, more sustainable impact on poverty in West Virginia. This program is aimed at recent graduates, gap year students, and any individuals interested in spending a year serving the community.
